Visual Processing Biases: Egocentrism
Visual information requires an origin: you. The 'eye.' And it requires a separate ‘other’ – that which the eye sees. It requires a distance, in the way that touch does not, because the fundamental question for vision is 'how far away from ME are YOU?' Vision's architecture is inherently egocentric and dualistic in a way that sound and vibration are not. With sound and vibration, patterns can be assessed without requiring a single-observer perspective. This isn't to imply that there is something 'wrong' with visual – a single-observer perspective is very, very useful. What I'd hope for from Feldenkrais lessons on this topic is that you would become more aware – and intrigued by – the biases, and more deft at moving from one set of biases (for instance, visual) to another set of biases (for instance, vibrational). There's something innately pleasing and refreshing about the switcheroo.
