Interoception at Three Levels
Your tracking of internal systems might be described as a bit of a sandwich. The 'top layer' is consciousness. We believe we are conscious of, say, how we move our arm (though there's some nuance there). There is a middle area of glimpses of awareness. There might be a type of sensorial awareness of something we usually take for granted. That awareness comes, briefly, to our attention – especially in a Feldenkrais class. At the bottom 'layer' lie the most obscure bundles of data collection, analysis and direction. These are usually opaque to us: a (mostly) wordless system of sensation and intelligence that has probably gotten rather bored. It faithfully launches another set of protections each time you are hurt or at risk. Over time, it may respond by habit – the great stultifier. This opaque aspect of yourself is capable of learning, but it might have sort of forgotten how.
