Speculation About Consciousness

Some of what I'm suggesting to you isn't backed by solid research. I'm speculating. The middle-muddle between fully opaque and conscious awareness? That's observation from Feldenkrais practice, not research validated. The consciousness paradox – that consciousness deprives you of choice when you try to use it to control, but restores choice when you use it to make distinctions? That's my framework for making sense of what I observe in lessons.

The whole idea that consciousness is not the pinnacle of awareness, but a sort of intruder and/or light, that awareness is the huge distributed assessment process and consciousness is just knowing that you know? That's my colloquial vocabulary, my useful fiction. The idea that you experience having just one shoulder joint rather than its component parts? These are hunches I'm following because they're productive, because they help people, because they fit the larger systems picture. But I won't pretend they're proven. To me, they are useful ideas, but I remain agnostic. Are they useful to you? If not, I applaud you for ditching them.
