Neurodivergence Research: Two Shaky Foundations
Researchers want to study the connection between interoception and neurodivergence. Interesting goal. But how? We haven't figured out how to grade interoception overall – and I don't see that it is possible. We're not particularly good at measuring neurodivergence either. Different processing architectures, different sensory tolerances, different social negotiations – collapsed into diagnostic categories that shift with every DSM revision. So, you've got a hunch there's a connection between two culturally laden, ambiguous, ill-understood conflations. You design a study anyway, measuring one data stream (heartbeat) and one rough category (autism? ADHD? both?). The foundation is so shaky.
