Influencing Habits of Movement
When you move habitually—when you raise your arm in the same way every time—you also notice habitually. You do all the predicting/noticing interplay habitually. Your noticing is snoozing.
You have raised your arm a million times. To pay attention would be superfluous. Or, actually, raising your arm hurts and you would just as soon not notice. And… well… it is boring, isn't it? To lift your arm once again?
When you freshen your attention, when you offer some alternatives, introduce some novelty… when you engage in little mind-clucks with pacing or differentiation or focus, when you take a fresh look… without ambition, without correction, without willing it… something may spontaneously change about how you organize yourself. Because something in you stopped sleeping at the switch.
It will have been the noticing that made the difference.
This is the Feldenkrais reorganization.
