Lungs Massage
Lungs move. They change your internal pressure. Continuously. It is fascinating, in a Feldenkrais lesson, to use the lungs to purposely apply force from the inside, almost like a fist pushing on, say, your clavicle, or your lower ribs, or your liver. You are giving yourself a massage — or we Feldenkraisers like to say a Functional Integration — from the inside. But of course in doing that, you are raising your interoceptive game a level or two. You are reminded how much influence you have over where you send your breath. And then you learn about your ribs from the inside. One of the most marvelous experiences, as you progress in your interoceptive finesse, is to actually sense the front of the spine — and how better to do this in the thoracic than by pushing the balloon of the lungs up against that inside spine, that area that is otherwise almost completely obscure to us?
