Lungs Snag
I listed all the ways that lungs help athletes but I left out the way lungs act as yet-another-viscera-stuffed-into-the-thorax. Lungs move. But also, sometimes lungs fail to slither around inside you as freely as they did when you were a baby. They stretch and shrivel enough to give you air, but they snag along the way. And that snag can mess you up in surprising places: your neck. Your sacrum for sure. Your liver. Lungs themselves aren't sensitive so you have to be really tricky to find and release the snags — as we are in movement classes. I think this is what Feldenkrais was getting at in his terminology about "glueing" the lungs — he really meant ungluing them. Slithering them. Unsnagging them. Think about it: if you have a "snag" in your lungs, that means that something else is getting perturbed Every. Single. Breath.
