What's Lost When We Toss Subjectivity

Of course when you toss subjectivity—and interoception—you are tossing a lot of data. Even if you think it is second-rate (and for some purposes it is), that's still a lot of data you are losing. But of course the data loss is only for starters. The deeper loss, when you are blind to your own internal senses is…you. The potential to influence your internal processes is lost. You lose a chance to bear witness to yourself. Whether it is how your shoulder blade glides across your rib cage, or the way you coordinate your breath, or how a change in your gaze alters your mood, I think you need to sense and register and refine not only how you move, but how you notice how you move. It can feel like a refreshing brain scramble. And when this attention brings about a greater internal harmony and effectiveness? That is intrinsically pleasurable. But before you can harmonize, you need to let yourself actually listen to the music.
