Medicine = Fixing?

Medicine is 'fixing'—right? If you start out at point A, and you get injured somehow so you are at the much less functional condition B, medicine is about getting you back to point A.

Broken bone? Fix it; return close-enough to the previous state. But… post-traumatic stress disorder? Is that fixable in the same way? You might return to the functionality you had before, but you won't be returning to point A, partly because you'll never be the point A person again. You'll need go on to point C or Q or W. This isn't just a psychological model—think about a stroke, loss of peripheral vision, limb loss and phantom pain— you and your doctor could find the way from a stroke to a condition as good as or better than how you were before the stroke, but you won't return to point A. You won't have merely gotten 'fixed' in the basic broken-bone-now-glued-together way.

You will have brought a new state of being into existence.
