Temporal Coupling and Social Media
When thinking about social media and how it differs from old-time performance, there's the sensorial murk but there is also the issue of 'temporal coupling.' Yeah, the poem stored in the library can be read later, by a stranger. But there is much more of a feeling of distinct starts and stops to the audience's consumption. Most importantly, the feedback loop has a clear beginning-middle-end in a relatively traceable way. But with social media, the feedback loops are confounding, untraceable (except as statistics), mushy.
