The Village Hut and the YouTube Channel

I tried to get at the question of social media-video-paralysis by asking myself how posting a video on youtube or instagram differs from a 16th century experience of reading a poem to my village in a hut or chapel and then having the written version stored in a library… Of course I instantly went to the somatic: when we hear and see a video, the sensorial streams are absent or mucked up—sound can be a bit off from picture. Vibration and ambient temperature and the rustle of the audience and the fragrance of smoke are gone. In a sensorial way, there is absence or slight murk or even deliberate distortion. That's a little off-putting.
