Catastrophe of the Scientific Method
Ah, to be verifiable. The catastrophe of now–the situation of this #@#$ ducked up world–is the harvest of a lens we have perhaps embraced too closely – that something has to be verified to be legitimate. ‘Verified’ means that something has to be verifiABLE and funded for verification efforts (whose quality varies), published (which is suspect) and, well, you know, ‘true.’ That's a lot of boxes to check and a lot of leverage for those with money. Granted, it is an incredibly effective lens in a lot of ways. The arc of science probably does bend toward truth. That is to say… science bends towards the truth about verifiable things. It is just too bad that possibly true things, which are inherently unverifiable, get treated as though they are wrong or invisible.
Note: this is only one way that the unacknowledged biases of 20th century science contribute to the 'catastrophe of now.' One of my students at the YMCA telling me “actually, I never thought about my feet before” is another.
